Description of innovation
Regenerate old cocoa trees by adopting the triple association: Cocoa trees+Food crops+Shade trees Involving producers in the choice of tree species ensures the sustainability of the system.
Purpose and additional value of innovation
To rehabilitate plantations without the risk of seeing a drop in income; replanting in old orchards without land conflicts; enhancing the value of shade trees and food crops in association with the cocoa tree.
Expert analysis/comments on innovation (impact, failure, success, etc.)
This project implemented in the abengourou department, a cocoa production zone, focused on a theoretical and practical intervention strategy. A sample of 12 plots out of a set of 20 plots was created in Amangouakro, Koitienkro, Padiegan and Zaranou. At the end of the trials, 20 producers mastered the techniques of staking and the production techniques of other speculations such as yam. 20 cocoa farms were created from May to July 2017. An overall average success rate of 95.12% was recorded for the cocoa trees. 100% success rate for banana trees. Low grass cover on the plots and low leaf attack. Also an improvement in the operating account with the inclusion of the production of associated crops.
Technical, microeconomic and ecological innovations in the cocoa production system
Adaptations of production systems and practices towards agroforestry, multi-shelf agriculture, agro-biodiversity and crop diversification, reintroduction of traditional and endemic products, organic agriculture and agro-ecological practices
